Josie Mendoza

Board Member

I was born and raised in the Mission Espada area, a descendant of the First Families of Bexar County. I attended Catholic schools all my life and began my work career at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in 1968 at the age of 17. I retired from AT&T in 1999.

After taking a year off, I began to work at Clarity Child Guidance Center, a non-profit behavioral health clinic for children. It was at Clarity that my interest in non-profit organizations began. I clearly saw the need for services for children. Upon my retirement from work, I began research to pursue membership in the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, a genealogical organization dedicated to perpetuating the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas.

I am a current board member of American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM), where I serve on the Programs Committee. This wonderful organization is dedicated to addressing the social needs and cultural aspirations of the indigenous community of San Antonio. For over 15 years, I have been a board member of Los Vecinos de las Misiones, a non-profit community development corporation. The objective of Los Vecinos is to help the residents surrounding the Missions with services such as home rehabilitation.

I am an active parishioner of Mission San Francisco de la Espada, where I have served as lector and past president of the Altar Society. I am also a member of LIFT (Ladies In Faith Together), our women’s bible study group. I am the proud parent of two adult children, a son and a daughter, and two grandchildren with whom I immensely enjoy spending time.
